Nexans to supply wind export cables for Empire Wind project phase one.
- The cables from this contract will power over 500,000 homes in phase one of the Empire Wind project
Nexans is a global organization and a critical player in sustainable transition. According to reports, Nexans yesterday announced the execution of a significant contract for the Empire Wind Project phase one. Equinor and BP structured the project as a 50-50 partnership. This signature is after the Preferred Supplier Agreement signed in March 2021 that prompted several months of work to negotiate a turnkey contract that covers the project’s design, manufacturing, laying and protection of export cables.
The CEO of Nexans, Christopher Guérin, said: “New York is one of the most aggressive states in the U.S. in terms of committing itself to create a fully carbon-free statewide economy, and offshore wind energy will likely be the main source of electricity for the state by 2035. “
The first phase of The Empire Wind 2.1gigawatt project, located on a lease area of about 20 miles (33km), is south of Long Island and east of the Rockaways. The project will deliver electricity to over 500,000 homes of over 1 million homes upon completion of the entire project. Nexans will install the export cables over 93 miles (150km) from the offshore substation for Empire Wind 1 to landfall at South Brooklyn Marine Terminal.
