- Nexsphere is to construct an offshore wind plant with a capacity of 500MW to 1GW in Tasmania.
- The project will install about 35 turbines off the coast of northeast Tasmania.
- Tasmania covers all its energy needs from renewables.
Nexsphere is set to deploy an “over-the-horizon” offshore wind farm with a capacity between 500MW and 1GW in the Bass Strait, separating Tasmania from the Australian mainland. In its earliest phase, the planned Bass Offshore Wind Energy (BOWE) project involves the installation of about 35 turbines off the coast of northeast Tasmania.
According to the utility, it will apply for a licence for BOWE under the country’s newly-approved Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Bill 2021. BOWE is expected to become operational by 2026.
The project has the potential to electrify more than 325,000 homes. It will thus contribute to the Tasmanian government’s goal of renewable energy generation becoming twice as much as the state’s consumption by 2040. Tasmania acquires all its energy needs from renewables.
