Nexus Green has been awarded a contract by the Ugandan government to design, supply, and install solar-powered irrigation systems in 687 sites in several districts in Uganda. The UK Export Finance (UKEF) will provide financing for the installations with a $104.1 million loan. The systems will be connected to a water source that will supply transmission pipes. Pumped water will be stored in reservoirs and subsequently distributed to the farms. Work has already commenced in Mpumu, in the Mukoko district.
An increase in drought in recent years has threatened agricultural activity in the East African country. This project aims to increase harvest via improved water supply to small-scale farmers. Agriculture is currently the main employer of over 40 per cent of the Ugandan population, but the associated impacts of climate change are currently threatening this.
