NIGER: Issoufou Inaugurates Power Station

President Muhammadou Issoufou of the Republic of Niger has commissioned an 89MW power station in the country’s capital, Niamey. Issoufou on Wednesday launched the oil-powered power station, which will serve as a back-up in the event of power interruptions from Nigeria.

The power station, funded under a $120 million Public-Private Partnership (PPP), will run for a term of fifteen years. The country seeks to reduce its dependency on electricity supply from neighbouring West African country, Nigeria.

According to the UN’s Human Development Index, the Republic of Niger, located in West Africa, has been named the poorest country in the world. It ranked 189 out of 189 nations.
