- ActionAid condemns alleged tariff increase
- Asks NERC to suspend tariff increment
Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) ActionAid has condemned the alleged increase in electricity tariffs nationwide. The organisation made this known in a statement following the leak of an alleged internal memo from Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on a planned increase in electricity tariffs in September. In the alleged document, EKEDC stated that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved the tariff increment.
In the statement signed by the Communications Coordinator in Nigeria, Lola Ayanda, the group said, “The increase in electricity tariff is not only ill-timed but insensitive to the precarious plight of Nigerians whose lean disposable incomes are already decapitated.”
“ActionAid’s position is hinged on the premise that previous hikes in electricity tariffs had not translated to effective and regulatory strategies to manage the impact of such hikes on macro-economic indices affecting end-users who are currently economically crippled and trapped.” the statement read.
ActionAid advised the Commission to compel stakeholders in the industry to work hard towards service delivery and pleaded with the Commission to suspend the alleged approval for increased tariffs.
