NIGERIA: AEDC Staff Call Off Strike Action

The Staff Union of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has called off the industrial strike action following the intervention of the Federal Government (FG), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE).

In a meeting chaired by the Minister of State for Power, Goddy Jedy-Agba,  a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was reached with the FG committing to intervene in the dispute and ensure the payments of all outstanding entitlements to AEDC staff.

”As at the end of an expansive meeting between the leadership of NUEE and relevant government institutions in the power sector over the industrial action which affected the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) franchise area regarding the unresolved dispute with the management of AEDC over unpaid entitlements,” the MoU read.

”Government intervened with the firm arrangement to ensure the payment of the outstanding entitlement of AEDC staff within 21 days counting from the day of the signing of the MoU,” the document stated.

The Minister of State for Power, Goddy Jeddy-Agba, who chaired the meeting, signed an MoU with the parties present. They include the Director-General BPE, Alex Okoh, the Chairman NERC, Sanusi Garba.

Other signatories include the Secretary-General of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Comrade Joe Ajaero, who represented the Staff Union; the representative of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Alex Olebe; and the Chairman FCT Council NUEE, Comrade Godfrey Aba.
