Nigeria is experiencing severe floods due to heavy rainfall in the country. There have been about thirty thousand people recorded dead and over 100,000 displaced citizens. Floods, according to the National emergency agency and Nigeria hydrological service agency, disclosed floods would only get more serious coupled with the heavy rains. Another catalyst for the flood is the opening of Lagdo Dam, Cameroon, to release the excess water. The released waters will cascade into Nigeria through river Benue and further overwhelm communities. This is expected to compound issues of inland reservoirs resulting in overflows of Kanji, Shiroro, and Jebba between now and October.

The director of NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed, stated that states likely to experience flooding are Adamawa, Benue, Kogi, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Taraba, Delta, Niger, Edo, Crossriver, Bayelsa, and Rivers states. He called on the government and people in these regions to take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of lives and reduce damage from the impact of the floods.
