NIGERIA: BPSR, NEMSA Discuss Power Sector and its Challenges

The Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR) partnered with the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) for a seminar titled ‘Roles, Responsibilities, innovation and Challenges in the Power Sector’. While declaring the event open, the Director-General BPSR, Dr Dasuk Arabi, emphasised the power sector’s role in the country’s economic and industrial growth. ”You will agree with me that erratic and unstable electricity supply in Nigeria over the years has adversely affected the growth of industrial, commercial and other productive sectors of the economy”, Arabi noted.

Arabi also stated that despite reforms in the power sector, privatisation aims had not been achieved, with the country still experiencing incessant power outages. ”Despite these reforms, the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry still faces the challenge of satisfying the power demand of the citizens and the urgent need to achieve the Federal Government’s target of 20 gigawatts (GW) of available electricity capacity”, Arabi stated.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Nigeria Electricity Management Services Authority (NEMSA) acknowledged the sector’s challenges. ”Use of substandard electrical materials and equipment by Utility Companies, other corporate organisations and individuals, ageing and poorly maintained Distribution Networks causing instability and few hours of electricity supply”, Ewesor stated.

Ewesor also added that NEMSA is actively working at standardising electrical equipment in the sector to improve supply in the country.
