NIGERIA: DisCos Reject Load Despite Availability

The Nigeria electricity supply industry was faced with an increase in the amount of load rejected by the Distribution Companies (DisCos). In the third week of May, the DisCos rejected a total of 4,219.31MW, representing an 11.7% increase from the previous week. According to data released by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), poor distribution network infrastructure contributed to the inability of the DisCos to take available capacity from the TCN. In the same period, the TCN wheeling capacity improved by 7.8% from 3,745.17MW daily average in the second week to 4,037.45MW in the third week in May.

The total amount of energy distributed by the DisCos fell from 24,042 MW in the second week in May to 22,437.26 MW In the 3rd week.  Ikeja,  Kaduna, and Enugu DisCos recorded the highest load rejected at 646.41 MW, 605.60 MW, and 479.90 MW, respectively. Kaduna DisCo load rejection saw a 346.66MW increase from the previous week owing to the industrial action embarked upon by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).
