Ado-Ekiti LGA council seals BEDC office
- Alleges unpaid debt of ₦15 million
- BEDC refutes claim
The Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area (LGA) Council has sealed off the offices of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC). The Council is alleging that BEDC owes a total of ₦15 million in mandatory tenement rates and operations permit since 2013.
The Council Chairperson, Omotunde Fajuyi while justifying the decision to seal the office accused BEDC of ignoring several notices on the payment of outstanding debt. “We invited the company to a meeting but they failed to appear. We also sent several messages to them, but there was no single response” she said.
The Public Relations Officer, BEDC Ekiti state, Kayode Brown while reacting to the actions of the Council refuted the claims that BEDC owes any debt. He said BEDC had paid over ₦13 million to the LGA for the tenement rates and other fees. “What we are guarding against now is that there are 16 local government areas in Ekiti, about 18 in Ondo, so if we succumb to them now, it means every other council area will now begin to do the same” Mr. Brown added.
Mr. Brown confirmed, the Headquarters of BEDC has been notified.”We have made a report to our Head office and I think they are handling it. That is the situation” he said.
