The Nigeria Energy Summit 2024 kicked off on Tuesday, October 15, at the Landmark Centre. The event attracted industry leaders, government officials, and energy experts who gathered to discuss the urgent need for decentralising Nigeria’s power sector.
The summit’s theme, “Breaking Barriers in the New Energy Era: Clean, Reliable, and Sustainable,” set the tone for critical discussions. Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, spoke through the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye. He highlighted the state’s commitment to decentralised power generation and distribution.
Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed that reliable power access fuels industrial growth, stimulates entrepreneurship, and improves the quality of life in Lagos. The governor asserted that decentralisation unlocks Lagos’ potential as an innovative and resilient megacity and helps navigate the challenges of the evolving energy landscape.
The governor detailed ongoing investments in renewable energy infrastructure and mentioned strategic partnerships with the private sector and development partners. These efforts promote sustainable practices across the state. “Renewable energy and sustainability lead Lagos’ energy agenda,” Sanwo-Olu stated, emphasising a focus on cleaner air and energy security for future generations.
Sanwo-Olu further explained that a decentralised energy approach empowers local stakeholders. It drives innovation and reduces reliance on centralised grids. This shift supports economic resilience and long-term environmental preservation.
The Honourable Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, also addressed the summit. He outlined the Federal Government’s role in advancing Nigeria’s energy vision through the National Integrated Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan (NIEP-SIP), which aims for universal electricity access by 2030.
Adelabu acknowledged Nigeria’s significant energy challenges. He highlighted inadequate generation capacity and heavy reliance on off-grid diesel generators. However, he expressed optimism that decentralisation could resolve these issues. Market diversification and renewable energy solutions can help Nigeria harness its vast energy potential.
The minister reiterated that these strategies are vital in promoting sustainability and fostering inclusive socio-economic growth.
The summit also provided a platform for discussions on regulatory frameworks. Stakeholders emphasised the importance of clear policies to attract investment and called for collaboration among all sectors to achieve sustainable energy goals.
As the summit progresses, discussions will focus on innovative solutions to Nigeria’s energy challenges. Attendees aim to identify strategies for implementation at local and national levels.
The Nigeria Energy Summit is a crucial forum for exploring sustainable energy strategies and addressing the responsible exploitation of the nation’s mineral resources. As the event unfolds, participants hope to share insights that could shape the future of Nigeria’s energy sector.
The commitment to decentralisation reflects a growing recognition of the need for change. Stakeholders believe that these initiatives could significantly enhance the power landscape in Nigeria. As a result, the summit stands as a pivotal step toward achieving a sustainable energy future.
