The Federal Government (FG) has dismissed claims of an imminent tariff increment. The Minister of Power, Sale Mamman in a statement, clarified that there would be no increase in electricity tariffs. He said the review process is routine as provided for in the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) 2005.
According to the statement, “The Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) per NERC’s regulation obtains inputs from operators in the market every six months to perform minor reviews and a major review is required every five years”.
He assured Nigerians of the FG’s commitment to the resolutions from the Joint FGN-NLC/TUC Technical Committee on Electricity Tariffs. The Committee recommended for “NERC to conduct an extraordinary review of the MYTO to further review factors and align them with current evolving realities”.
“The tariff for customers on service bands D & E (customers being served less than an average of 12hrs of supply per day over a period of one month) remains subsidized in line with the policy direction of the federal government,” he added.
The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) last week announced the conclusion to the extraordinary minor review process.
