NIGERIA: FG to Distribute 4 Million Meters

The Federal Government (FG) under the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP) is set to begin distributing 4 million meters in the programme’s second phase. In a statement by the Special Adviser on Infrastructure to the President, Ahmad Zakari, the FG has completed arrangements for the project’s second phase.

“In preparation for the second phase (known as Phase 1) of the NMMP, the Nigerian electricity sector regulator, NERC, has conducted extensive consultations and stakeholder management and has revised its metering guidelines. This phase will provide up to 4 million meters and shall also use a similar financing mechanism as phase 0.” the statement read.

The FG further noted that in the initial phase of the NMMP, 750,000 meters were installed in 8 months, which is an improvement from the previous metering programme under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) regulation. The FG also noted its support for local meter assembling and the commitment of the Central Bank to the support of local meter manufacturers.
