NIGERIA: Generation In Shambles as 8 Power Plants Lay Idle

The Minister of Power, Sale Mamman has announced that a total of 17 power plants in the country are currently idle, undergoing maintenance or experiencing gas constraint issues. This has resulted in the poor electricity supply experienced around the country.

Mamman took to his Twitter account earlier in the day to make the announcement. “I sincerely regret the recent Power outages across the Nation and the difficulties it has brought with it, and wish to assure my Fellow Nigerians that everyone involved is working assiduously to restore the National grid to its previous historical levels and exceed that” the Minister tweeted.

Due to “the breakdown of some National Integrated Power Plants supplying electricity to the national grid” the following power plants Sapele, Afam, Olonrunsogo, Omotosho, Ibom, Egbin, Alaoji and Ihovbor are currently not generating electricity to the national grid. Another seven power plants are experiencing gas constraints issues. These include Geregu, Sapele, Omotosho, Gbarain, Omuku, Paras and Alaoji power plants.

Jebba and Shiroro hydroelectric power plants are undergoing annual maintenance and having water management issues, respectively.

This announcement comes barely one month after the announcement of back-to-back peak generation figures in the country.
