  • Community leaders seek an improvement in metering

Community leaders in Ikorodu have condemned the continued estimated billing of residents in over 100 communities in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state. The Chairman of Ereko Community Development Association (CDA) Alhaji Adams Yusuf has said only 10% of communities with an estimate of 500 homes have been metered in the Itaoluwo area. Yusuf also alleged residents had to bribe the officials to get metered.

”Imagine an uncompleted three-bedroom house where only the occupants stay in just one of the rooms to be getting estimated bill of ₦16,000 and sometimes ₦23,000 in a month”, Yusuf said. ”…And our electricity distribution companies (DisCo) officials never provide answers when we ask how it came to such amount from the calculation”, he added.

The Chairman, Harmony CDA Odogunyan Mr Tola Adekoya, said ”The so-called estimated bill is unfair, unjust and to us, the customers here is simply a scam”. Adekoya also insinuated that the lack of adequate metering might be a ploy by the DisCos to exploit electricity consumers in the area.

Recall that the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had ordered the DisCos to put an end to the estimated billing of electricity consumers.
