- NLC insists on a ₦15 kWh electricity tariff
- Gives December deadline
- Labour also demands a 40% reduction in gas price for electricity generation
The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has given the Federal Government (FG) a deadline of December to comply with the agreement reached between the Union and the FG of ₦15kWh for electricity tariffs. In a statement released by the NLC President Ayuba Wabba, the union has called into question the posture of the FG regarding the agreements reached during the negotiations between both parties.
”The posture of the Federal Government to flout agreements is completely unacceptable and would be resisted.” the statement read. The NLC, rejecting the recent reduction in gas prices of $0.38, also demands a 40% reduction in gas prices for electricity generation companies. The union posits that the gas prices should be $1.50 instead of the current price of $2.50.
The union accused the FG of reneging on the agreement reached in February on the sale of gas to the Generation Companies in Naira.
”It is significant that the incessant increase of electricity tariff was one of the several issues discussed between the representatives of the Federal Government and Organised Labour on September 28, 2020.” ”Specifically, an agreement was reached at the meeting to set up a Federal Government of Nigeria, FGN-Organised Labour Technical Committee on Electricity Tariff.”
