Nigeria has taken a major step in its clean energy ambitions with the inauguration of Africa’s first Renewable Energy College and a Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant in Kogi State.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, said the new facilities position Nigeria at the forefront of renewable energy capacity development in Africa. He described the projects as a major investment in the skilled workforce needed to accelerate the continent’s clean energy transition.
Vice President Kashim Shettima represented the President at the inauguration held at the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara. He said completing the projects within two years demonstrates the government’s commitment to delivering strategic infrastructure.
According to the Office of the Vice President, the Barefoot Renewable Energy College (BARECKS) was established to close the skills gap in Africa’s renewable energy sector. The institution will train technicians and specialists to install, operate and maintain renewable energy systems. This approach addresses a shortage of skilled workers that has slowed the sector’s growth across the continent.
Tinubu said Nigeria has abundant renewable resources, including solar, wind, biomass and hydropower. However, limited technical expertise has prevented the country from fully harnessing them. As a result, Nigeria has missed opportunities to expand electricity supply and create jobs.
The President added that the college adopted a vocational training model inspired by India’s successful solar engineering programme. He expressed confidence that the initiative would produce a new generation of certified professionals to support Nigeria’s growing renewable energy industry. He said the graduates would also be competitive in the international labour market.
Tinubu further urged development partners, research institutions, international organisations and private investors to collaborate with the college. According to him, stronger partnerships will expand research, promote innovation and strengthen technical education across the sector.
He also commended the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology and the Energy Commission of Nigeria for driving the project from conception to completion. In addition, he acknowledged the Kogi State Government for providing an enabling environment for the landmark investment.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo described the institution as a strategic investment in human capital. According to him, the college will strengthen technical capacity, attract fresh investment and stimulate economic activity in host communities. He added that the project reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges through knowledge-based solutions.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, said the project aligns with the government’s goal of building a knowledge-driven economy. He noted that developing skilled renewable energy professionals is essential to Nigeria’s ambition of becoming a one-trillion-dollar economy. Udeh also urged the pioneer students to uphold professionalism and high ethical standards throughout their careers.
The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, said the college features modern training facilities. These include smart classrooms, battery energy laboratories, a mini-grid simulation centre and energy efficiency laboratories. He said the facilities will support advanced research and practical training in renewable energy technologies.
The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Dr. Ahmed Tijjani Anaje, welcomed the establishment of the institution. He described it as an opportunity for young Nigerians to acquire practical technical skills. Anaje also thanked the Federal Government for selecting Kogi State to host the pioneering facility.
