- MDAs owe over ₦90 billion to the DisCos
- FG working with the DisCos on a debt settlement structure
The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) has stated that the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government currently owe electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) at least ₦90 billion in arrears.
The Executive Director, Research and Advocacy, Sunday Oduntan, stated that since the privatisation of the power sector in 2013, the MDA debt profile had experienced a gradual increase.
“All MDAs’ debt is in excess of N90bn and, the military is part of that. We came on board 2013, and since then, how much has been paid by the MDAs?” Oduntan said.
“There was a time when a former minister of power said they (government) had concluded arrangement on how to settle the debt, but as I speak with you, the bills are still there unpaid. Since privatisation, there have been issues around MDAs debt,” he added.
Oduntan, however, noted that the Federal Government is working with the DisCos to reach a debt settlement structure.
“I can confirm that the current government is working now to sort out the MDAs debt,” Oduntan stated.
“It (FG) is looking at how to structure the debt and I can confirm that this is ongoing.” he added.
