NIGERIA: National Assembly to Ban Structures Under Electrical Structures

The House of Representatives (HoR) has adopted a motion for a Bill to ban structures erected under high tension electrical installations. The motion for the Bill sponsored by Rep. Kolawole Taiwo Musibau was, presented to the house on Wednesday and was subsequently adopted.

While presenting the motion, Rep. Musibau said “People build and transact businesses under 33KVA power transmission lines and therefore are susceptible to be electrocuted”. He also spoke on the laid down Laws on the installation of electrical infrastructure. “there are existing laws that forbid the erection of buildings under electric high tension wires which specify a 50 meters’ distance between power lines and buildings” he said.

The house, in adopting the motion urged the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) to ”As a matter of urgency, demolish all buildings and structures under high tension electric cables all over the country” and the Ministry of Power to “Ensure the maintenance of high tension cables as they are time-bound and to carry out repairs and maintenance not just when an accident occurs”.

The House also, mandated the House Committee on Power to ensure implementation.
