NIGERIA: NERC to Review Five Consumer Regulations

  • Begins consultations this month

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has announced it will carry out a review of five sector regulations on customer care in a bid to improve and protect electricity consumers nationwide.

In a notice issued on its website, the electricity regulator stated that it would review the Customer Complaints Handling Standard and Procedures Regulations (2006), the Meter Reading, Billing, Cash Collections and Credit Management for Electricity Supplies Regulations (2007), the Customer Service Standard of Performance for Distribution Companies (2007). Others include, the Connection and Disconnection Procedures for Electricity Services (2007), and the Methodology for the Determination of Connection Charges for Electricity Supply Regulations (2012).

”Developments in the Nigeria electricity supply industry have necessitated a review of these regulations to reflect the current reality,” the notice read.

Consultations on the benefits of the reviews will begin this month, with industry stakeholders expected to be in attendance.
