Northcore transmission line under construction
- WAPP member states to save $58 billion in transactional costs
- Project funded by AfDB, World Bank and others
The West African Power Pool (WAPP) Northcore Transmission line project will benefit four member countries in savings. Nigeria, Togo, Benin and Niger Republic will save at least $58 billion in transaction costs when the transmission line becomes operational. The Minister of Power Sale Mamman made this known at the first session of the Joint Ministerial Steering Committee of WAPP member countries.
”The World Bank estimates that power trade within the WAPP could lead to cost savings of $58.0 billion per year, enabling covered countries to benefit from more cost-effective hydro or gas-based imports”, Mamman noted. ”I am fully confident that the completion of this project, in the 3rd quarter of 2023, will come as a sustainable solution and major contributor to the power sector of West Africa”, he added.
The inter-country project will enable the beneficiary countries to sell excess electricity generated within the West African Power Pool. The project is co-funded by the African Development Bank, World Bank, and the Federal Government and costs $568 million.
