- Nigeria to begin construction of the Nigeria-Morocco pipeline project
- Project to benefit 14 countries
- Construction to span 25 years
In line with the declaration of the ”Decade of Gas” by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria prepares to begin the construction of the Nigeria-Morocco pipeline project. This was made known by the Chief Operating Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Yusuf Usman. The pipeline is expected to benefit at least fourteen countries. It will run through West African countries such as Benin, Tago, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Senegal, and Morocco.
According to Usman, the project will ”….pick up a lot of African countries. Some of these African countries have gas they will inject into the pipeline while some don’t have but can take the gas for development, if they cannot pay for the gas, they can get electricity”. ”It is this kind of vision that is required to lift Africa from the picture that you saw, which is currently in the dark into light. It is a wonderful initiative to do”, he added.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had in 2019 approved the Nigeria-Morocco pipeline project. The project will cost $25 billion and would take 25 years to complete.
