- NES holds 27th Summit
- Speakers urge diversification of energy sources and Private sector participation in the energy sector.
The President of the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN), Dr Segun Adaju, has stated that Nigerians spend at least $16 billion on generators annually. He made this known at the 27th Nigerian Economic Summit, where he lamented poor infrastructure, inadequate supply and the need for a diversification of energy sources.
”Nigeria is the highest generator user globally, with 30 to 40 million generators, the highest in the world,” Adaju stated. He further stated that the Federal Government (FG) should use already identified renewable energy sites to construct micro and mini-grid projects.
”We must make sure that different resources we have to electrify Nigeria in every part of the country are put in use, as about 8,000-10,000 sites ready to go in micro and mini-grids,” He added.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council (EAC), Doyin Salami, stated that Nigeria needs to take advantage of the resources of the private sector to improve the energy sector.
”We need to have a clear appreciation and understanding of what the government can do and what the private sectors can contribute because the government cannot do everything,” Salami said.

Hi Adaora, thank you for the reporting. Just some corrections, the annual spend on fuel generators is 16 billion dollars annually and not 16 million.
Also, there are estimated 30m to 40m generators I’m Nigeria, according to a NESP GIZ report.
