A recent report obtained by the Punch Newspapers has shown that just seven electricity generating plants power produce 59% of electricity generated in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). These seven plants contribute approximately 59% of electricity generated in the country. The generation plants include Egbin, Azura-Edo, Kainji, Shiroro, Odukpami, Jebba, and Delta.
In a World Bank reports, Egbin power plant leads as the highest electricity generator in the country with 13% generation. The remaining six power plants contribute about 7%-8% generation to the national grid. The remaining power plants in the country contribute minimally to the grid or lay idle due to operational challenges.
The generation sector suffers from several challenges, including inadequate gas supply, liquidity challenges, and a growing debt profile.
