- Ondo communities to be connected to the national grid
- The Minister of Niger-Delta gives a deadline of December 2021
- The communities have been without electricity for 14 years
The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has stated that Ondo South Senatorial District communities will be connected to the national grid in December. Several communities in the Senatorial district have been without electricity for the last 14 years.
Akpabio made this known during the Ministry’s 2022 Budget defence with the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs. Senator Nicholas Tofowomo raised the alarm on the power blackout in the Ondo communities describing the situation as ”embarrassing and despicable”. He sought to know the measures the Ministry was taking to restore power to the affected communities.
”The situation is embarrassing and despicable because I continue to wonder if Ondo South is part of Nigeria because suffering from electricity blackout for about 14 years has grounded many economic activities in the district.” Senator Tofowomo said.
In his response, Akpabio said, ”A lot of efforts have been made in that regard, and I can assure you that the electricity supply will be restored by the end of this year and the people will be happy about it.”
The Ministry had presented a Budget proposal of ₦28.1 billion with at least 90% earmarked as Capital Expenditure (CAPEX). Akpabio urged the Committee to increase the budgetary allocation to allow adequate funding for capital projects.
