NIGERIA: Over ₦150 Billion Spent on Self Generation – MPDC Chairman

  • Self-generation cost  ₦150 billion, says MPDC Chairman
  • Urges NERC to implement the Eligible Customer regulation fully

The Chairman of the Manufacturers Power Development Company Limited (MPDC), Mr Ibrahim Usman, a subsidiary of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), has stated that its members have spent over  ₦150 billion on electricity generation due to the poor supply from the sector. He made this known at the 60th Power Dialogue session hosted by the Electricity Hub

“Right now, we self-generate about 13 to 15 megawatts of electricity, and that’s a lot of money, not just for diesel but for maintenance. We have roughly N150 billion that was spent just on maintenance between 2019 and 2020.” Usman said at the dialogue.

Usman further stated that ten manufacturers under the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) had applied for the Eligible Customer license. He noted that only one of those customers were granted the license; however, over 1500 jobs had been created due to the improved power supply. Usman urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to fix the challenges impeding the implementation of the Eligible Customer Regulation so that manufacturers can benefit from the regulation.
