- Nigeria currently preparing for the post-crude oil era says Onu
- National Energy Summit 2021 holds
- Reforms ongoing in the sector
Nigeria’s Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu has said Nigeria is positioning itself for a future without crude oil. He made this known while declaring open a two-day National Energy Summit 2021 organised by the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN). The theme of the event is “Energy Sufficiency and Sustainable Economic Growth in Nigeria: Experiences and Opportunities from Global Energy Cooperation and IEC”.
The Summit seeks to strengthen the country’s membership at the International Energy Charter (IEC) through the development of its gas sector. While speaking at the event, Onu noted the efforts of the Nigerian Government in preparing for a future without crude oil. He noted the ongoing power sector reforms and emphasised the efforts of the government to commercialise gas flaring in the gas sector.
“Reforms within the sector are ongoing. Nigeria is preparing for a post COVID-19 era. Natural gas utilisation is receiving a lot of attention. Our methanol utilisation policy is aimed at increasing the use of natural gas in the production of both fuel and electricity generation”, he said. He added further, “This will help us to stop gas flaring in the country, protect and preserve our environment, as well as diversify our energy sector. We are investing in both research and the use of renewable energy in the country”.
The Summit is held in collaboration with international agencies such as, the International Energy Charter (IEC), Brussels and the European Union Commission in Nigeria.
