Renewable energy in Nigeria has taken a bold step forward with the Federal Government’s inauguration of the National Committee on Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, Innovation and Certification (NCREEIC). The committee was created alongside signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with strategic partners to accelerate Nigeria’s energy transition and promote sustainable growth.
At the signing ceremony in Abuja, Chief Geoffrey Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, highlighted the initiative’s importance. He explained that the committee will deliver clean, reliable, affordable energy. At the same time, it will also promote industrial growth, job creation, and environmental protection. Furthermore, he confirmed that the committee will focus on innovation, collaboration, certification, and local content development.
Transitioning to renewable energy in Nigeria involves more than electricity generation. Instead, it represents a broader commitment to innovation and sustainability. Consequently, the government assured Nigerians that the NCREEIC will adopt an inclusive approach. Ministries, private stakeholders, and civil society will all participate. As a result, this collaboration will strengthen policy, attract investment, and build trust.
The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, also stressed the importance of energy efficiency. He reminded stakeholders that the UN Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) appointed the ECN as Nigeria’s lead agency. The commission coordinates the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Bill, which awaits presentation to the National Assembly. Therefore, the bill will establish minimum energy standards and align national policy with global practices.
In addition, Abdullahi explained that the committee will consolidate existing efforts and encourage research. He mentioned ECN projects such as appliance testing, audits, and awareness campaigns. These activities already provide a strong foundation for further progress.
Meanwhile, the National Coordinator of the Committee, Chijioke Nwadavid, pledged transparency and accountability. He assured Nigerians that the committee will foster innovation, strengthen collaboration, and accelerate renewable energy projects nationwide. Finally, he described the initiative as a transformational step towards sustainable development.
With these commitments, Nigeria is moving closer to a future powered by clean energy and innovation.
