NIGERIA: Should We Expect Reduced Electricity Tariff in 2022?

  • Expect tariff reductions in 2022
  • FG promises a downward trend in electricity tariffs following a reduction in gas prices

According to a member of the Federal Government’s Technical Committee on Electricity Tariffs, consumers should expect a downward trend in the electricity tariffs in 2022. The Committee, chaired by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN), was set up to ensure an improvement in electricity supply at a cheaper cost to the end-users.

”It is expected that tariffs will trend downward in 2022 as an increase in supply and optimisations occur through investments in grid and market stabilisation,” a Committee member said in a report published by The Nation Newspaper. ”This means that Nigerians should expect more energy, cheaper per unit cost this year,” the member added.

The Federal Government, in August 2021, reduced gas prices for Domestic Supply Obligations (DSO) to $2.18. Despite this reduction, electricity tariffs did not come down. An investigation carried out by The Electricity Hub in October 2021 showed that the cost of electricity in September 2021 was higher than that in the preceding months.
