Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, sent warm congratulations to his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. He described the anniversary as a testament to the long-standing partnership between both nations. Diplomatic relations were formally established in 1960, shortly after Nigeria gained independence, when the USSR recognised the new nation among the earliest countries.
Over the years, bilateral relations have expanded through cooperation in education, defence, infrastructure, and science. Tuggar highlighted Russia’s scholarship programmes for Nigerian students in medicine, engineering, and sciences. These initiatives have played a pivotal role in developing human capital in Nigeria. Furthermore, in the past decade, both countries have broadened collaboration in strategic sectors, including energy, counter-terrorism, agriculture, and solid minerals.
Cultural exchanges and people-to-people links have also strengthened mutual understanding. Tuggar noted that Nigeria values Russia’s consistent support in multilateral forums and considers Moscow a vital partner in tackling shared global challenges.
The minister emphasised the importance of scaling up cooperation in trade, investment, science, technology, and international peace and security. He added that exploring new areas while reinforcing existing partnerships would yield benefits for both nations.
Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to consolidating the relationship. He described the 65th anniversary not only as a reflection of past achievements but also as a springboard for a stronger, mutually beneficial partnership in the years ahead.
