- WAPP to construct an interconnection line between Nigeria, Niger, Burkina Faso and Benin

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced its plans to construct a transmission line under the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP) North Core Project. The transmission line will connect Nigeria, the Republic of Niger, Burkina Faso and Benin. The announcement was made by the Managing Director and current Chairman of WAPP, Engr Sule Abdulaziz.
At the 52nd WAPP Executive Board meeting, Abdulaziz said, “The WAPP North Core Project that seeks to interconnect Nigeria, Niger, Burkina Faso and Benin is in the implementation phase with the procurement process underway.”
“The project is expected to be completed by 2023 and is part of efforts of the WAPP to integrate the power systems of West African countries by delivering priority projects, which would ensure that all 14 countries in the mainland of ECOWAS are eventually interconnected,” he added.
Engr. Abdulaziz also stated that the WAPP would undertake other projects such as energising the 330kV Volta-Lome’ C’-Sakété interconnection (Ghana, Togo, Benin) line, Cote d’Ivoire–Sierra Leone–Guinea project, which would also be inaugurated soon.
Abdulaziz reiterated the commitment of the WAPP in ensuring electricity interconnectivity to spur economic growth in the region.
