NIGERIA: The Country’s Largest Solar Power Plant Becomes operational in Kano

  • The Kumbotso solar power plant was recently inaugurated in Kano State by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
  • The plant has a capacity of 10 MWp.

The 10 MWp solar photovoltaic facility was opened by the Nigerian president in Kumbotso Local Government Area. This is the first solar power facility in the Federal Republic of Nigeria to be grid-connected.

Haske Solar Company, a special purpose organization established at the Federal Government’s request by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, is carrying out the project, which was tendered in 2020. (NSIA). Therefore, Kano State owns 15% of Haske Solar, the Federal Government of Nigeria owns 80%, and Kumbotso Local Government owns 5%.
An investment of $15 million was needed to build the Kumbotso solar facility. Nigeria’s credibility in the battle against climate change and its determination to become carbon neutral by 2060 are strengthened by the realization of this project, which was first proposed in 2018. The Kumbotso project’s accomplishment also shows Nigeria’s ability to base its economy on decarbonized electricity.

Over 16,000 MW of installed capacity, including 2,000 MW from renewable sources, are currently available in Nigeria.
