- Vice President Yemi Osinbajo speaks on Africa’s energy transition at University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
- The strategy suggests using gas as a transition fuel to balance out the grid’s heavy reliance on solar energy in Nigeria.
According to Nigeria’s vice president Yemi Osinbajo, the development of renewable energy, particularly solar, is a key component of the country’s Energy Transition Plan, with a target of developing 250 GW of solar capacity by 2060. According to him, the strategy suggests using gas as a transition fuel to balance out the grid’s heavy reliance on solar energy.
Osinbajo was giving a talk about the energy transition in Africa at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
According to him “Africa’s endowments, renewable energy, natural resources and a young workforce, present a compelling set of circumstances for several pathways to climate-positive growth.”
Osinbajo also states that Africa should not just be considered a victim of climate change but also a potential solution. He acknowledged that Africa has a sizable technological hydrogen potential and added that when the price of green hydrogen decreases, the continent might become more competitive in various derivatives like ammonia, fertilisers, and e-fuels.
