NIGERIA: Warri Residents Lament Escalating Power Bills

  • Residents lament rising electricity tariffs and continuous poor supply

The residents of Warri, Delta State, have complained about the rising electricity bills issued by Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) despite inadequate and erratic electricity supply.

”I occupied a two-bedroom apartment. Sometime last year, I was paying ₦5,000, some months later it was increased to ₦8,000, and I complained to the bill distributor.” Mr Samson Onogide, a resident of Warri, lamented.

”I was surprised to receive a ₦25,000 bill on Monday, November 15th. The same was applicable to my neighbours. Where are we heading to in this country?” he said.

”So I do not know the reason for the sudden increase. Please, BEDC should better do something now,” Onogide said.

”Before now, we were paying ₦7,000, later it was increased to ₦12,000, then to ₦21,000. We complained to the management, and they promised to amend it.” another resident, Kingsley Osarodion, said.

”I am using this medium to call BEDC to order before we embarked on a serious protest to their offices,” Osarodion said.
