NIGERIA: We are Working to Improve Service Delivery – Minister of Power

  • The Ministry is working to resolve sector challenges
  • To improve performance monitoring of utility operators

In a statement to mark 50 days in office, the Minister of Power, Engr Abubakar Aliyu, has revealed that the Federal Government (FG) is currently seeking solutions to the challenges in the power sector. Aliyu noted with dismay the several challenges plaguing the sector since the 2013 privatisation exercise and after up to 2 trillion in FG interventions in the sector.

The Minister stated that the Ministry under his leadership is ”…working tirelessly as we explore opportunities that will, in the short term, deliver the much-desired quick wins whilst still focusing on the long-term objectives of increasing the available Power, improving the quality of services, attracting the much-needed investment, promoting efficiency, competition and growth and lastly ensuring transparency and accountability in the value chain of the Power Sector.”

”We shall be taking a careful and detailed look at issues of policy, capacity and the technical requirement, amongst other things.” the statement read.

Aliyu also stated that an area of concern for the Ministry is the performance monitoring process for the utility operations. He noted that the  ”Ministry is working to intensify performance monitoring in light in light of the recent implementation of the Performance Improvement Plans of the DisCos.” the statement read.

Other areas of concern for the Ministry include improving the sector’s liquidity, billing transparency and service delivery.
