On August 28, the Nigerian government unveiled the draft of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan (NIEP-SIP), marking a significant step towards developing a robust, sustainable, and inclusive power sector.
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu described the NIEP-SIP as a crucial milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to address the challenges within its electricity sector and particularly meet the needs of all Nigerians. At the presentation in Abuja, Adelabu highlighted that the policy results from extensive consultations with industry experts, stakeholders, and development partners.
He emphasised that the NIEP-SIP reflects a collaborative and thorough process, building on previous initiatives such as the Electricity Act 2023, strategic ministerial engagements, and the 8th Africa Energy Market Place (AEMP).
The NIEP-SIP outlines comprehensive interventions across the power sector’s entire value chain, including generation, transmission, distribution, and off-grid areas. It aims to create a resilient and efficient electricity sector that supports national development.
The policy’s key focuses include improving sector liquidity, fostering investment, integrating renewable energy, enhancing grid reliability, and ensuring equitable electricity access for underserved communities. Additionally, it aims to boost local content and capacity and incorporate gender considerations.
Adelabu assured that the policy’s implementation would be guided by transparency, accountability, and inclusivity. He called for continued collaboration from all stakeholders to achieve the policy’s goals.
He thanked everyone involved for their dedication to creating a brighter and sustainable energy future for Nigeria at all costs. He expressed confidence that Nigeria’s power sector could improve and also catalyze economic growth and social development with ongoing support.
