AF Mercados has reported a total of 210 system collapses in the sector between 2009 – 2019. In its report on the status of the industry, it stated: “Between 2010 and 2019, Nigerian electricity consumers have had to contend with 206 power grid collapse, ten of which occurred in 2019”.
According to the report, “There are frequent interruptions throughout the day resulting into loss of production and even failure of equipment”. The effects of poor electricity supply have is the growth of self-generation. The report estimates, “Over 90 per cent of businesses and 30 per cent of homes have diesel-powered generators, meaning that there are currently about 15 million generators in Nigeria”.
The report explained that the unreliability of the DisCo and failure of consumers to pay for electricity used are to blame for the high levels of Aggregate Technical Commercial and Collection (ATC&C) losses. According to the report, Distribution networks across the country require a complete and comprehensive revamp in order to improve supply to the consumers.
The report was carried out for the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED). It was funded under the European Union (EU) Capacity Building and Technical Assistance Program for the Nigerian Power Distribution Sector.
