- NLC and other labour unions stage a walkout on FG
- Alleges FG reneged on the previous agreement
- Lack of trust between citizens and FG/Labour grows
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and other labour unions late Sunday night walked out on negotiations with the FG. The meeting between the labour unions and the FG held at the statehouse on Sunday.
This comes as the unions have decried the recent increase in petrol and electricity tariffs in the country. Recall that the NLC, barely 2 months ago negotiated a suspension of the electricity tariffs with the FG. The negotiations were concluded on the eve of the planned industrial action.
The Deputy National Chairman of the NLC Joe Ajaero explained the reason for the walkout as, the FGs failure to reason with the union on an amicable way to deal with the rising cost of livelihood in the country. Speaking on the increase in fuel prices he said: “We say we can’t accept deregulation that it is impulse-driven and that the refineries must work before you go into this and then you go into price-fixing”.
Regardless of the efforts of the labour unions, citizens have expressed a lack of trust in these negotiations. Despite the growing rates of inflation and resultant hardship on the citizens, the NLC is yet to agree on embarking on industrial action.
