The NLNG Change Your Story workshop has renewed its focus on journalist capacity-building in Nigeria. It emphasises digital and technological skills essential for modern newsrooms. Thirty-two journalists from various media organisations participated in a strategic three-day programme in Abuja, which concluded on Wednesday. The workshop provided insights into artificial intelligence, digital communication, and their impact on contemporary journalism. Participants gained practical tools to enhance reporting effectiveness and audience engagement.

The workshop forms part of NLNG’s broader commitment to strengthening media professionalism and stakeholder capabilities. Through hands-on exercises and expert-led discussions, journalists learned to use new media tools for real-time reporting. They also explored ways to expand audience reach beyond borders and foster meaningful interactions across platforms. This approach reinforces NLNG’s dedication to building competence and confidence among journalists in a fast-paced media environment.

Speaking at the workshop, Sophia Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, highlighted capacity development as a central pillar of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. She emphasised that the NLNG Change Your Story workshop equips journalists with the skills to produce professional media content. Horsfall described journalism as a calling that informs, educates, and influences society. She encouraged participants to apply their knowledge to amplify their professional impact.

NLNG’s support for the media extends beyond training. The company sponsors the NLNG Prize for Energy Reporting at the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence, among other initiatives. Anne-Marie Palmer-Ikuku, Manager of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs, explained that NLNG’s investments are deliberate. They aim to raise professional standards in Nigeria’s media practice. She added that the workshop addressed real newsroom pressures, including speed, verification, audience trust, and relevance.

Digital communication specialist Dan Mason facilitated the programme, while media veteran Taiwo Obe led the Journalism Clinic. They guided participants through practical approaches to digital storytelling, data visualisation, online fact-checking, audience engagement, and effective management of digital presence. These interventions strengthen a resilient media ecosystem capable of delivering accurate, impactful journalism.
