NNPC Gas, NIPCO Partner with Ssonic for LNG Supply in Lagos

  • The partnership will provide 80 million standard cubic feet of natural gas daily to the Ssonic Petroleum LNG plant for 20 years.
  • With a reliable gas supply, the LNG plant is expected to contribute to job creation, increased energy availability, and the region’s overall economic advancement.

NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd (NGML), a subsidiary of NNPC Ltd, has taken a significant step in advancing Nigeria’s gas sector by signing a Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) with Ssonic Petroleum Ltd.

The deal, executed in collaboration with its Unincorporated Joint Venture (UJV) partner, NIPCO Gas Ltd, will see the supply of natural gas to Ssonic Petroleum’s proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos State.

The agreement, signed on Thursday, March 6, 2025, establishes a long-term commitment: The NGML-NIPCO UJV will provide 80 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) of natural gas daily to the Ssonic Petroleum LNG plant for 20 years.

Natural gas is increasingly considered a cleaner, more cost-effective alternative to traditional fossil fuels. It is crucial in the country’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

This strategic partnership underscores NNPC Ltd’s commitment to leveraging Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves to enhance industrial growth, drive economic development, and support the transition to cleaner energy sources.

By supplying natural gas to the Ssonic Petroleum LNG plant, NNPC Ltd and its partners aim to accelerate domestic gas utilisation, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a key player in the global energy market.

The Lekki Free Trade Zone, known for its growing industrial and commercial significance, provides an ideal location for such an initiative. With a reliable gas supply, the LNG plant is expected to contribute to job creation, increased energy availability, and the overall economic advancement of the region.

This agreement aligns with the Nigerian government’s broader objective of harnessing the nation’s gas potential to drive sustainable development. It also strengthens Nigeria’s role in the global energy transition by promoting gas as a viable alternative to more polluting fuels.
