  • NOSDRA confirmed the clearance and certification of 355 out of 363 remediation grids in the Bodo oil spill clean-up.
  • The Director General, Chuwuemeka Woke, urged Renaissance Energy to commence restoration, stressing the moral responsibility to repair the damage inflicted on host communities.

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has confirmed that it has cleared and certified 355 of the 363 remediation grids in the Bodo oil spill clean-up project in Rivers State.

Chuwuemeka Woke, Director General of NOSDRA, announced the progress on Thursday, April 10 in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the Renaissance Energy Group management team.

Woke described the achievement as a significant step towards environmental restoration in the Niger Delta, an area long plagued by the devastating effects of oil spills.

“With 355 of the 363 grids already cleared and certified, the ground is now set for full-scale restoration,” Woke stated.

He commended the progress made so far and described the approval of the grids as a critical milestone in efforts to rehabilitate the Bodo community, which has faced extensive environmental degradation due to oil pollution.

Woke placed the next phase of responsibility squarely on Renaissance Energy Group.

“We are now waiting on Renaissance Energy to take the next step,” he said. “This is no longer a Shell responsibility—it is now yours, and we are prepared to work with you to ensure success.”

He also underscored that remediation goes beyond regulatory compliance—it is a moral responsibility to the affected host communities.

“This is about restoring dignity, health, and livelihood to a people whose environment has been ravaged for too long,” he added.

The clean-up effort remains one of the most significant in Nigeria’s history. NOSDRA has pledged its full support to ensure the restoration phase begins without delay.
