The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has lauded the commencement of operations at the Dangote Refinery, describing it as a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s energy independence and economic development. The refinery, which began production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) on August September 1, 2024, represents a significant leap forward for the nation’s energy sector.
In a congratulatory letter addressed to Aliko Dangote, President/Chief Executive Officer of the Dangote Group, and Mr. Afolabi Olawale, General Secretary of NUPENG, they expressed profound admiration for the achievement. The letter, delivered on Wednesday, August 4, 2024, in Abuja, commended Dangote and President Bola Tinubu for the historic launch of the refinery’s PMS production.
Olawale highlighted the long-awaited nature of this milestone, noting that Nigerians and the entire African continent eagerly anticipated it. He praised Dangote for his courage and determination, saying, “We are proud of you, Alhaji Aliko Dangote. You have dared to dream and tread where no mortal has ever done.”
The General Secretary acknowledged that establishing the world’s largest single-train petroleum refinery and petrochemical plant is a testament to Dangote’s unwavering commitment and innovation in the energy sector.
The successful initiation of PMS production at the Dangote Refinery is a significant achievement for the refinery and Nigeria’s broader energy self-sufficiency and economic growth goals. Olawale appreciated Dangote’s visionary leadership and tireless efforts, which have played a crucial role in realising this landmark project. “Your contributions to Africa’s industrialisation and economic development are commendable,” he said.
NUPENG is particularly enthusiastic about the positive impacts the refinery will have on Nigeria, including job creation and socioeconomic prosperity. The union anticipates the refinery will foster substantial growth and enhance the nation’s economic landscape.
Olawale assured that NUPENG, as a union committed to the welfare and advancement of petroleum and natural gas workers, will continue to support and collaborate with the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Company. The union aims to contribute to the sustainable growth and success of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
