OCI to Acquire Green Hydrogen from the Netherlands NorthH2 Project

  • 4GW electrolysis plant to be constructed
  • OCI will source 1GW of green hydrogen from the Netherlands’ NorthH2 project.

OCI, a nitrogen products manufacturer, has revealed that it will source 1GW of green hydrogen from the NorthH2 project. As revealed by the company, this move is to develop integrated green ammonia and methanol value chains in the Netherlands. It further revealed that the effort would help decarbonise its production and downstream food, fuel and consumer good value chains.

OCI revealed that it had engaged several consortiums, including Shell Plc, Equinor, RWE AG, Gasunie and Groningen Seaports, and the company that is developing the NorthH2 project. In addition, Eneco Groep, a Dutch power and gas supplier, will also be a part of the project as an investor.

Feasibility studies are ongoing on the NorthH2 project, which aims to construct a 4GW electrolysis capacity in Eemshaven on the North Sea coast and the necessary offshore wind capacity by 2030. The strategic location of OCI’s production sites connects to the designed pipeline that will transport green hydrogen produced in Eemshaven. The green ammonia and methanol could be used in OCI’s production processes and as feedstock in various sectors and products such as transportation, furniture, clothing, healthcare and cosmetics, and automotive and windmill blades. The 1GW hydrogen will help OCI reduce its carbon emissions by 900,000 tonnes every year, contributing significantly to the climate targets of the Netherlands.
