- Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has announced the provision of 100 new CNG buses and additional CNG conversion kits to address fuel price hikes and promote cleaner energy.
- The initiative is part of a broader energy transition strategy. It aims to stabilise transportation costs and reduce environmental impact by shifting from petrol to Compressed Natural Gas.
Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has launched a significant energy transition initiative by announcing the provision of 100 brand-new 18-seater Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for local transporters.
This move addresses the dual challenges of rising fuel prices and environmental sustainability. The governor also revealed that the Federal Government will contribute 20 CNG-enabled buses and 500 conversion kits to the state within the week.
This initiative is a broader strategy to shift from traditional petrol and diesel-powered vehicles to cleaner, more efficient energy sources. By promoting the use of CNG, a more environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline, the state is seeking to mitigate the impact of recent fuel price increases and contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
During a meeting with transport unions, Governor Abiodun highlighted the significant fuel price hikes in transportation costs. The introduction of CNG buses aims to provide a sustainable solution by utilising compressed natural gas, which can help stabilise transport costs and reduce the dependency on fluctuating fuel prices. This initiative aligns with global efforts to transition to renewable energy and reduce carbon footprints.
The Federal Government’s contribution of 20 CNG buses and 500 conversion kits supports Ogun State’s energy transition by facilitating the shift of existing vehicles to CNG-powered systems. These kits will be used at the state’s conversion centre, a crucial facility for retrofitting cars in the Southwest region, further advancing the state’s energy strategy.
Governor Abiodun emphasised that while fuel prices have risen, transport fares should not increase disproportionately. The switch to CNG is expected to mitigate these fare increases by providing a more stable and cost-effective energy source for transportation.
This initiative underscores Ogun State’s commitment to integrating sustainable energy solutions into everyday life and demonstrates a proactive approach to economic and environmental challenges. The program represents a crucial step in the state’s energy transition strategy, aiming to balance economic pressures with a commitment to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
