- Ogun State launched 2,000 electric motorcycles to reduce transportation costs and improve environmental sustainability.
- Governor Abiodun announced the $40 million Giga Facility, which will create over 60,000 jobs and assemble various electric vehicles.
- Minister Sa’idu Alkali and NNPCL’s Mele Kyari praised Ogun’s initiative and urged other states to adopt similar e-mobility and CNG programmes.
Ogun State introduced 2,000 electric motorcycles on July 31 as part of its e-mobility initiative. Governor Dapo Abiodun hosted the launch at the Arcade Ground, Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Governor Abiodun explained that the programme aims to lower transportation costs and improve environmental sustainability. He noted that electric bikes can travel 75-80 kilometres on a full charge and up to 200 kilometres per charge. The initiative is expected to cut transportation expenses by up to 40%.
Abiodun described the programme as a response to the removal of fuel subsidies and the rising cost of diesel. The electric motorcycles mark the first phase of Ogun State’s broader e-mobility strategy.
Additionally, Governor Abiodun announced the construction of the Giga Facility at the Special Agro Processing Zone in Iperu-Remo. The $40 million investment will include an assembly plant for electric bikes, tricycles, buses, cars, and swap stations. The facility will create over 10,000 direct jobs and 50,000 indirect jobs.
The governor urged citizens, especially the youth, to engage constructively with the government rather than resorting to protests. He emphasised the need for collaborative efforts to achieve positive outcomes.
Minister of Transportation Sa’idu Alkali praised Ogun State for leading Nigeria in e-mobility. He noted that the state has joined other African nations in adopting e-bikes for transportation. Alkali encouraged other states to follow Ogun’s example of partnering with the federal government on CNG usage and supporting the e-mobility programme.
Mele Kyari, Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), represented by Executive Vice President Lekan Ogunleye, commended Ogun State for its innovation and leadership.
Commissioner for Transportation Mr Olugbenga Dairo highlighted that the e-mobility programme follows last year’s conversion of buses to CNG—this effort aimed to address increased transportation fares due to the removal of fuel subsidies.
Launching electric motorcycles represents a significant step toward a more sustainable and cost-effective transportation system in Ogun State. The Giga Facility will support this transition by providing essential infrastructure and job opportunities.
