Ogun State Partners with Brazilian Firm to Boost Power Supply

  • The Brazilian energy company Ambar Energia has developed 27 power plants producing 4.3GW of electricity.
  • To tackle the power shortage, the state government is constructing a new 30MW power plant to serve government offices and residential areas.

In a strategic move to enhance the power supply and drive industrial growth, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced a partnership with Ambar Energia, a leading Brazilian energy company, to establish power plants across the state.

This initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to ensuring adequate electricity supply and food security for residents.

Speaking at a meeting with an Ambar Energia delegation led by Marcelo Zanatta, Governor Abiodun emphasised the need for Ogun State to leverage the recent constitutional amendment that decentralises power generation.

He stressed that as Nigeria’s industrial hub, Ogun must generate electricity to meet the high demand of factories within the state.

Governor Abiodun revealed that Ogun and Lagos states consume about 40% of Nigeria’s total 6,000MW power output, yet the supply remains insufficient. He pointed out that Nigeria’s projected 45,000MW demand by 2030 presents a huge investment opportunity that Ambar Energia could explore.

The state government is constructing a new 30MW power plant to serve government offices and residential areas and tackle the power shortage. However, Abiodun described this as just “a drop in the ocean,” emphasising plans to establish additional captive power plants in three zones of the state.

“We desire to partner with Ambar Energia to generate and distribute the required electricity for the state,” Abiodun said.

The governor highlighted that Ogun State is rich in natural resources such as gold, lithium, bitumen, silica, and limestone. It is also Nigeria’s largest producer of cement, cassava, poultry, and eggs. However, he noted that adequate electricity is crucial to unlocking these economic potentials.

He also disclosed that construction of Africa’s largest garment production facility, requiring 300MW of electricity for its operations, would soon commence at the Gateway International Airport’s Special Agro Processing Zone.

Given Ambar Energia’s experience, with 27 power plants producing 4.3GW of electricity, the governor expressed confidence in the company’s ability to support Ogun State in becoming an investment destination.

Reaffirming his administration’s pro-business policies, Abiodun stressed that the government’s role is to create an enabling environment for private sector investments.

“The government does not do business—it enables business. Our vision is to work with the private sector to drive economic prosperity and improve citizens’ livelihoods, “he noted.

Ambar Energia representatives, including Fabio Bindemann and Marcus Preitas, toured key facilities such as Gateway International Airport, Olorunsogo Power Plant, and Onijanganjangan Power Plant to assess potential investment opportunities.

Beyond power, Governor Abiodun also engaged with a Brazilian agribusiness delegation from JBJ, JBS, and SEARRA Group, led by Jose Batista, to discuss investments in large-scale farming.

With over 16,000 square kilometres of land—12,000 of which is arable—Ogun State presents vast opportunities for agribusiness expansion. The governor revealed that the state has 200,000 registered farmers actively engaged in crop production who could collaborate with large-scale investors.

To support farmers, the government has established initiatives such as:

  • A farmers’ market in Abeokuta for processing and selling produce.
  • Farm input support, including tractor services and farmland clearing.
  • A ₦5.4 billion investment in farmer training and capacity building.

Abiodun further emphasised Ogun’s well-integrated transportation network—comprising land, sea, and air access—as well as its strategic gas infrastructure, making it a prime location for energy and agricultural investments.

With these strategic partnerships, Ogun State is positioning itself as a leader in Nigeria’s industrial development, power generation, and agribusiness.
