Ohmium and SwitH2 have finalised plans for a 300 MW green ammonia floating production project off the southern coast of Europe. This innovative project uses established Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) technologies. It will feature Ohmium’s advanced Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser solutions on SwitH2’s 268-meter FPSO vessel.
The floating facility aims to produce up to 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and nearly 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia each year, supplying multiple oceangoing vessels for an entire year.
Ohmium’s PEM electrolysers will harness offshore solar and wind energy. They will also utilise treated seawater to generate green hydrogen. This hydrogen will feed into an onboard ammonia synthesis unit. The team will then transfer the final product to an ammonia carrier for buyer distribution.
The Dutch government supports the project, which also gained in-principle design approval from the Norwegian certification agency DNV. The expected timeline for green ammonia production sets the target for 2029.
