- Oman selects twelve developers for five wind power projects to diversify its energy mix and target net-zero emissions by 2050.
- With a total investment of RO 500 million (USD 1.2 billion), the projects will generate over 1 GW of power and cut carbon emissions by more than 978,000 tonnes annually.
- International and local companies, including ACWA Power and TotalEnergies, will develop these projects.
Oman is advancing its energy transition by selecting twelve developers for five significant wind power projects. This initiative will diversify the national energy mix and help achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, as outlined in Oman Vision 2040.
The new wind projects will spread across the country:
- Jalan Bani Bu Ali Wind IPP will rise in the South Sharqiyah governorate with a 91-105 MW capacity. The project expects to start commercial operations in the first quarter of 2027.
- Duqm Wind IPP targets a 234-270 MW capacity, with operations set for the fourth quarter of 2027.
- Mahoot I Wind IPP will be located in Al Wusta governorate and have a planned capacity of 342-400 MW. The project will cost RO187 million and aim for a commercial launch in the fourth quarter of 2027.
- Dhofar II Wind IPP will rise next to the existing Dhofar Wind I IPP. The project plans a 114-132 MW capacity and aims to begin operations in the second quarter of 2027.
- Sadah Wind IPP in Dhofar governorate will have a capacity of 81-99 MW, with a projected start date in the fourth quarter of 2027.
These projects represent a total investment of RO 500 million (around USD 1.2 billion). They will generate over 1 GW of power and cut carbon emissions by more than 978,000 tonnes annually, significantly boosting Oman’s renewable energy capacity.
Developers for these projects include international and local companies. The selected firms—ACWA Power, Sembcorp, Sumitomo, TotalEnergies, Masdar, and EDF Renouvelables—underwent a rigorous selection process to assess their expertise and ability to deliver effective renewable energy solutions.
This initiative aligns with Oman’s goal to derive 30% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. The wind power projects will increase energy capacity and enhance Oman’s global renewable energy market position. They will drive local innovation and develop new skills within the energy sector.
Oman’s commitment to advanced technologies and collaboration with top industry players highlights its proactive stance in energy transition. These projects contribute to the global shift towards more sustainable energy sources as countries seek to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The impact of these wind power projects on the local economy and environment will undergo close monitoring. Their success could be a model for other nations aiming to diversify their energy sources and achieve sustainability goals. By adopting sustainable practices and leveraging industry expertise, Oman positions itself as a leader in renewable energy. This approach will help meet decarbonisation targets and strengthen economic resilience against future energy challenges.
