- OQ Alternative Energy is developing a 10–15 MW green hydrogen pilot in Duqm to gain hands-on experience and support Oman’s national hydrogen strategy.
- OQAE signed $2 billion worth of renewable energy deals, including solar, wind, and hydrogen projects, totalling up to 7 GW across Oman.
OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE), a subsidiary of the state-owned OQ Group, has unveiled a pilot-scale green hydrogen project in Duqm as part of its mission to become Oman’s National Champion for Alternative Energy.
The facility, featuring an electrolyser capacity of 10–15 MW, will be built in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD). OQAE says the initiative will provide critical operational experience in green hydrogen production and lay the groundwork for future large-scale developments.
“This initiative will provide hands-on experience in executing and operating green hydrogen projects, testing real-world applications, and generating insights for future large-scale hydrogen developments,” OQAE stated in OQ Group’s 2024 Sustainability Report.
Furthermore, the announcement coincides with a significant step forward in OQAE’s renewable energy ambitions. On Monday, May 12, 2025, the company signed agreements to develop, finance, and collaborate on clean energy projects worth around $2 billion.
Key developments include a 100 MW solar plant in Saih Nihaydah (North Solar), two 100 MW wind farms—Riyah-1 and Riyah-2—in Amin and West Nimr, a 700 MW renewable project to power United Solar’s polysilicon facility in Suhar, a 500 MW renewables scheme for Jindal, a 140 MW green energy project with Oxy Zero in Block 9, and a 105 MW renewable scheme with Vale.
Together, these projects form part of a broader 7 GW renewable energy pipeline developed across Oman.
OQAE has also secured a major strategic advantage. Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP), Oman’s sole electricity and desalinated water off-taker, has agreed to take up to a 25 per cent stake in future Independent Power Projects (IPPs). This move expands OQAE’s client base to include oil and gas operators, industrial customers, and direct electricity demand via NPWP projects.
As a central player in Oman’s national green hydrogen strategy, OQAE is advancing three flagship hydrogen projects.
They include the HYPORT Duqm, a joint venture with DEME and BP featuring 1.3 GW of renewable energy; the Green Energy Oman (GEO), a collaboration with InterContinental Energy, Enertech, and Shell, delivering 4 GW of power; and SalalaH2, a project in Dhofar with Marubeni, Samsung C&T, and Dutco, bringing 3.8 GW of capacity.
OQAE aims to help Oman reach its national target of producing at least one million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030.
In addition to hydrogen production, OQAE is exploring downstream opportunities to drive demand and support global energy transitions. These include low-carbon bunkering, e-fuel ventures such as e-Gasoline and e-SAF, e-Methanol using biogenic CO₂, and an e-NG facility producing methane from green hydrogen and CO₂.
By combining large-scale project development with strategic partnerships and market diversification, OQAE is firmly positioning itself—and Oman—as a leader in the global clean energy transition.
