Orange SA, a French telecommunications company, plans to build Europe’s first solar farm, a 5-MW installation, on the strategic satellite communications site at Bercenay-en-Othe in the Aube department.

The company announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding for this project with solar installer Reservoir Sun.

The project’s work begins immediately with an environmental impact analysis, which is expected to last up to 12 months. The goal is to assess the potential impact on living species of the proposed solar farm, which would cover a surface area of 50,000 square meters if built.

Orange stated that 1 MW of the plant’s total capacity will be allocated for self-consumption and the rest for grid reinjection. Overall, the facility should be able to meet 20% of the site’s energy requirements. It is scheduled to be finished in 2025.
